A rapid visit to the Spey

On 14th June Rotrheimurchus dashed up to the River Spey and roosted again at Loch an Eilein. In the morning he was perched just a mile from his natal nest but by the afternoon he had gone back to the Ballinluig area of Perthshire -ranging as far as Loch Tay.

A day of displaying

I visited his nest on 12th June as the rain cleared – what awful weather we are having. Red 8T was perched opposite the nest where the female was standing on edge of nest with young, but I do not know how many. On 13th June in late afternoon, Iain MacLeod, an old friend from New Hampshire and a keen osprey worker, was with a group of American birders at Rothiemurchus and he reported a satellite tagged osprey displaying high above the fish farm – at 6pm and still going at 9pm. I thought it would be Rothiemurchus but in fact it was Red 8T – he spent most of the time flying between 2pm and 9pm – do not know why he was set off, rather than staying at home by the nest not far away.

Now with young

Morven has young but not sure how many because the weather has been wet and each time I’ve monitored the nest she has been crouching over the young trying to keep them dry.

Young but not sure how many

Beatrice has young, think two but not sure because the weather has been so wet that usually she is crouching over them to keep them dry

Now Rubha Re, Wester Ross

Moved to the west on 5th June and then north on 6th to cross Loch Maree to spend a little time at Letterewe before flying slowly west on 7th to end up on the Rubha Re peninsula west of Gairloch
