Really sad news

Very sad email on 27th May from  Ignacio Gamez Carmona of the  Government of La Rioja to say that they had collected the dead body of Fearna at Enciso on 26th. I have asked for more details and some photographs, and will update this webpage as soon as they arrive. It is very disappointing that this young osprey which came north to Europe in its first summer instead of summering in West Africa has come to grief.

Visiting Loch of the Lowes

Emma from Loch of the Lowes telephoned this morning to say an osprey with a satellite tag called at the nest there yesterday – I’m sure it would have been Rothiemurchus. She is going to send some photos so I will put them on the blog when they arrive.

Eggs still being incubated

I was at Red 8T’s nest yesterday and his mate was incubating in the nest – Red 8T was absent and probably at the Rothiemurchus fishery. where I gather he thinks he is top dog and tries to chase the other ospreys away.

Still incubating

I was watching Morven last evening – for a change a beautiful sunny evening with a brilliant red sun sinking below the horizon behind me through the trees. She was incubating low in the nest – occasionally looking at roe deer coming out to graze in the field and watching two RAF Tornados flying back over her to Lossiemouth. Then in the rapidly approaching dark her mate, yellow HA, came in at 10.12pm with half a trout and did a change-over to allow Morven to have a feed before the night incubation. A lovely hhour of osprey and wildlife watching.

I was at Beatrice’s nest today and she was crouching in the nest so I was sure that she had just hatched – several other nests had also hatched in last week.

Ranging in Perth and Angus

Rothiemurchus is spending a lot of time flying arund looking at osprey nests and trying to find a mate and a place to loive – he has ranged from north of Loch Tay in the west to the Loch of Lintrathen in Angus.
