Still going to far east – near Zaragoza

Blue XD set off at 0800GMT from roost near Griegos and fkew north, but before long the track chagned to NE in the strong NW winds. He pased Calamocha at 1043hrs and reached the River Ebro at Velilla de Ebro at 1300hrs.  This is 50km SE of Zaragoza so his track is far to the east of normal. He will either reach the Medieterranean coast or pass over the eastern end of the Pyrenees, unless he navigates quickly towards the north-west.

Still at the reservoir

Green J was still at the reservoir at 0800GMT this morning

Too far east in Spain?

Blue XD set off on migration at 0830GMT flying north, but quite quickly near Carrizosa changed direction to a NE flight over Castille la Mancha.  By 1254GMT (last signal of batch) he was flying NE at 33mph near Motilla del Palancar. He roosted for the night in lightly wooded plateau near Griegos.

North to Normandy coast

Beatrice flew 104 km NNW to the Normandy coast. She was off after 0800GMT and at 1300hrs was west of Caen. It was a cloudy wet day so she was stationary near Saint Gabriel in the early afternoon and then moved to be just south of the coast by late noon. She roosted overnight SW of Arromanches-les-Bains in field border trees. Tomorrow the weather is windy (WNW up to 40mph) cloudy and wet in morning, sunnier in noon. Does not sound a good day to cross the Channel but it’s not that far to the Isle of Wight.

North through Spain

Blue XD was off at 0625GMT and headed NW along the mountains to Archidona and then north, flying over Iznajar Reservoir at 0948. At 1100 he was at Baena and turned NE and then N, and around 1300GMT he stopped on the River Guadalquivir at La Ropera to fish and eat. Then headed on NE and the last signal at 1602GMT saw him flying towards Castellar de Santiago. Another good flight.

Another day of rain

Beatrice stayed put in the poor weather. In the morning she flew 2km west from her night roost in the forest  to spend the day at Les Etangs de Fontenal.

Rain bound

Beatrice fished in lakes on the north edge of the forest and ranged there during the day in poor weather – thick clouds and rain

On north through Morocco

Blue XD crossed a range of 2000 metres mountains 0800 -0900GMT and then continued north and at 1103 passed Missour. The last signal of the batch was at 1141GMT and he was heading for Tsiwant. Blue XD at this point was about 200km south of the Mediterranean coast but some 200km of his previous crossing points.

Crosses to Europe

Blue XD had a great day’s flight of 520km.  At 0800GMT he started his migration over the Midlle Atlas mountains and by 1434GMT was west of Taza. He flew NNW through Morocco and cleared the coast at 1752GMT when he was flying at 46km/hr at an altitude of 1549 metres. His flight was well east of normal routes, being 84 km east of Gibraltar, and his altitude had dropped to just above sea level after an hour flying. He arrived at the Spanish coast east of Malaga at 2145GMT and immediately roosted in an olive grove 2 km inland near Almayate.

Blue XD heading north in Morocco

This evening Blue XD has crossed the Sahara and the first data is starting to be collected by mobile phone masts. The track below is from 1613GMT to 1742GMT this afternoon when he covered 65 km NNE. The data for the last 5 days will be slowly downloaded through the system and will show his route over the Sahara Desert. He is now heading for the Med.

Later data showed he flew 410km today and roosted in the veneing in rocky ravines south of Gourrama
