Rothie still in same area except during afternoon of 25th August, when he made a trip down to the Gambia border and back.

23 August 2010

He has been very settled in the creeks in Senegal to the north of the Gambia River. The map shows his locations in the last 5 days. I wonder what he will do when the adults ospreys return from their European breeding grounds. Will they push him out of the best feeding areas or has he established his future wintering site?

08 August 2010

Rothie made a round trip north to the northern parts of Sine Saloum on 2nd & 3rd August. He left his usual haunts after 1300hrs GMT on 2nd and flew 113 kilometres north to a northern arm of Sine Saloum, roosting in dry scrubland near Gandiaye. Next morning he returned the marshes and then slowly headed back south on a westerly route back to his startung point. He covered 74 kilometres on the 3rd August. Now settled back in usual haunt.

02 August 2010

No change - he continues to summer in a really good area of osprey habitat.

26 July 2010

He has remained in the same area of Senegal and should be well on with his first moult. In a months time the first returning ospreys will be arriving back in West Africa and he will again have competition at fishing sites from adults. I wonder if this location will be his wintering site and may be even his future regular wintering site. We are not sure when this choice is made in a young osprey's life.

10 July 2010

He remains in his favoured summering locations, sometimes moving between the two arms of the creek and marshes. Locations within an area of 62 sq kms. It is interesting that he has remained in Senegal all summer and shown no movement to the north. It will not be long for the first of the older ospreys to return to West Africa and create some competition for the immatures.
