Cromarty

On 25th August 2015, we caught a ringed osprey at Rothiemurchus fishery, near Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands, and I fitted a GSM satellite transmitter, assisted by Keith Duncan.  Our thanks to Julian Orsi and Rothiemurchus Estate. This osprey had been ringed as a chick, one of a brood of two, on 13th July 2013 by Brian Etheridge at a nest near Kildary in Easter Ross. A two year old is an ideal bird to track because we can learn how, when and where he will find a breeding site, may be in his third year, when he returns next spring from his winter quarters. I wonder where he winters? I have called this osprey Cromarty – a reference to the fact that his parents would have fed him on flounders from the Cromarty Firth when he was a chick. The Foundation is very grateful to Deborah Thompson for funding the transmitter.
