General
In the afternoon of 29th June 2011, we went to another eyrie on the Grosvenor Estate Trusts land in NW Sutherland within the Foinaven Special Protection Area for Golden Eagles. This home range is also included in the PhD research project on golden eagles by Derek Spencer started in 2011. Estate keeper, Robert King, took us out to the nest cliff in his Argo. This nest was on a relatively simple cliff and Derek abseiled into the nest and brought the eaglet to the bottom of the cliff. It was a male in good condition. After ringing and fitting his satellite transmitter the eaglet was returned to its nest. Thanks for the encouragement and support of the staff at Achfary, with special thanks to head keeper David Allison and estate factor Dougal Lindsay. The children at Achfary helped with the naming of this eaglet.
Annual Movements
Reay fledged on 3rd August. He remained within 30 square km of his natal site until 5th November, when he headed to Strathkanaird, north of Ullapool. He flew on to Glen Affric and then to Glen Roy. In 2012 he has been ranging widely throughout the central and nothern Highlands, including visiting the islands of Skye and Raasay.
