Beatrice

 Introduction

Beatrice is a female osprey that was fitted with a satellite transmitter as an adult in 2008.  To view further details about her movements and history click on her link on the left.

Two young growing

Beatrice is rearing two young – she is around the nest all the time, except at 5 PM on 23rd June when she flew to Loch Dallas

Living in Perthshire

On 14th June Rothiemurchus dashed up to the River Spey and roosted again at Loch an Eilein. In the morning he was perched just a mile from his natal nest but by the afternoon he had gone back to the Ballinluig area of Perthshire -ranging as far as Loch Tay.

A rapid visit to the Spey

On 14th June Rotrheimurchus dashed up to the River Spey and roosted again at Loch an Eilein. In the morning he was perched just a mile from his natal nest but by the afternoon he had gone back to the Ballinluig area of Perthshire -ranging as far as Loch Tay.

A day of displaying

I visited his nest on 12th June as the rain cleared – what awful weather we are having. Red 8T was perched opposite the nest where the female was standing on edge of nest with young, but I do not know how many. On 13th June in late afternoon, Iain MacLeod, an old friend from New Hampshire and a keen osprey worker, was with a group of American birders at Rothiemurchus and he reported a satellite tagged osprey displaying high above the fish farm – at 6pm and still going at 9pm. I thought it would be Rothiemurchus but in fact it was Red 8T – he spent most of the time flying between 2pm and 9pm – do not know why he was set off, rather than staying at home by the nest not far away.

Now with young

Morven has young but not sure how many because the weather has been wet and each time I’ve monitored the nest she has been crouching over the young trying to keep them dry.

Young but not sure how many

Beatrice has young, think two but not sure because the weather has been so wet that usually she is crouching over them to keep them dry

Young growing

Visited the nest site this afternoon, Red 8T perched in next door tree while female stood on edge of nest with young. I couldn’t see how many – they were lying down in the sun – a welcome change from the rain.

Living on the River Tay

Over last week he has been living around the River Tay between Ballinluig and Grandtully, and often ranging around the local Perthshire countryside.

Looking to the future

Rothiemurchus is not going to breed this summer but he is looking far and wide for a nest and a mate. On the 31st May he roosted overnight again at Loch an Eilean. Next day he headed south and by 10am on 1st June was in the Blair Athol area. On 2nd June he was around Loch of the Lowes at midday and then returned north to Blair Atholl. On 3rd and 4th he favoured the area east of Aberfeldy and on 5th was back near Dunkeld.
