Completed an amazing 1000 mile flight

A fantastic migration from the English Midlands to North Spain

Fiddich was still around her roost area south of Manchester at 7am and 8am,and at 9am an 10am was perched further south to the north of Congleton. Sometime later she started migrating and was passing Birmingham at 2pm, and between 5pm and 9pm she was perching at several places near Priors Marston. But sometime soon after she set off SSW because at 7am on 13th when the transmitter started collecting data again she was 226 miles further on flying over the Western Approaches west of the Channel Islands.  At 0800GMT she was approaching the north coast of Brittany and an hour later was SE of Brest heading south out over the Bay of Biscay. She flew strongly down over the Atlantic and when the transmitter swiched off for the night at 2000hrs, she was flying S at 27kph 140 metres above the sea. Fom the subsequent data she probably reached Spain after 2300hrs.

At 0600GMT on 14th, she was roosting in the sea cliffs just north of Nueva. But by 1000hrs she was in the mountains flying S and then settled down 1300 hrs in a rver valley near Vegas del Candado. What another fantastic migration.

Through Spain to Morocco

Red 8T flew 190 km during the night so at at 0600GMT this morning he was north of the Sierra Morena mountains. He rested there for 3 hours and then headed on, flying south to the east of Seville  at 1200hrs.  At 1400hrs he was heading for Medina Sidonia at an altitude of 1184 metres. At 1600 he was exactly over Tarifa and set off from the point across the straits to Morocco. Arriving west of Tangier he headed on through Morocco and roosted for the night near Thine Srafen after a migration of 616km

Red 8T migrating fast to Spain

Red 8t was already migrating south at 0700GMT on 13th and was over Dax in SW France at 100ohrs flying SSW at 55kph. He crossed the Pyrenees, just west of Hautza and an hour later was west of Pamplona. At 1700hrs he had flown as far south as Siguenza and an hour later was flying to the east of Madrid, before settling for the night near Mora after flying 620 km

Migration on September 13th

Fantastic first day’s migration

Stan left his nest after 10.30am on 12th September, probably after a eating a fish caught by his father in Findhorn Bay. Strong NW winds helped him south and there was the calls of pink-footed geese in the air – arriving from Iceland. At midday he was flying through the Cairngorm mountain passes and at 1pm was east of Pitlochry flying due south at 40kph. At2pm he was approaching Loch Leven and then flew over the Forth road bridges headoing for the Scottoish Borders which he reached ar 4pm. At 5pm he was near Wigton and then flew over the Lake District. At 7pm he was at Preston flying S at 54kph and the last signal gave him still flying strongly south at Market Drayton.  328 miles in 9 hours – a really good start of his autumn migation. I wonder where he stopped to roost last night.

Heading for Gironde or even Pyrenees

Red 8T was just NW of Bauge at 0900GMT, after roosting last night SW of Le Mans. He crossed the River Loire at Gennes and then headed south on fats migration passing over Niort at 13ooGMT at 65Kph at 968 metres altitude, and an hour later (last signal of day) was over St Jean-d’Angely at 1111 metres. He was heading for the River Gironde and may be even further south by dusk.

First part of migration on 11th September

Willow – a young female marsh harrier

With the help of Martin Cook, I satellite tagged a young female marsh harreir at a nest that he had located in the county of Moray. He had ringed the two young and I fitted tag 21253 – a GPS satellite tag. For the first six weeks the young female harrier ranged in the general area of the breeding site, and was more often close to the nest site probably because she was dominant.
