Rothiemurchus finally set off on spring migration at 1100GMT on 3rd April and headed north, then NE, flying east of Kaolack and roosted overnight east of Touba, after a day flight of 156 km. On 4th he flew 122 km north to roost overnight near the river into Lac d’Guiers, close to Fiddich’s main wintering area. Next day he drifted north over the Lac and then over wetlands north to the River Senegal and roosted in Mauritania near the Rosso road. On 6th he flew back SW to the River Senegal to fish and then headed NW for the Atlantic coast which he reached at midday. During the afternoon he tracked north along the coast and when he roosted at dusk he was 40km south of Nouakchott. Looking at the weather in Europe, which is cold with bitterly N and NE winds, with snow further north, he has not missed much by migrating late.
Flew north to Haddington near Edinburgh
Morven’s home!
Just received an email from my friend Anne in Moray (I’m updating the website while on a project in Mallorca) that she saw Morven on her nest this afternoon at 3.30pm. Great that she is back again – I look forward to seeing her when I get back at the weekend.
No news
There have been no further signals from Red 8T’s transmitter so there has either been a transmitter failure or in the 4 days following the last transmission he set off over the Bay of Biscay and was lost at sea, or he was killed or died in Spain. In the next few weeks I will check his nest site carefully to see if he returns to Scotland.
No change
Still not started migration
Last night Rothiemurchus was roosting at his wintering site. U am surprised he hasn’t started his spring migration.

Slow going
Still there
No movement yet from Rothiemurchus – he needs to get a move on if he is to get a nest and mate this year.
