Settling down for winter

After arriving on the backwater of the River Gambia Rothiemurchis is using his usual haunts, but has made some longer flights – 7.5 km NW at 1300GMT on 19th October and then 7.3 km east that afternoon and evening, whil he flew 21km NW and back morning of 13th October.

Arrives winter home

Rothiemurchus made a final flight to his exact wintering location, arriving there at 1100GMT on 10th October

Crossed into Africa

He made a strong flight of 364 miles today with a lovely crossing of the Atlantic from southern Portugal to Morocco.

Restarts migration on 30th September

After his autumn stopover in NW Galicia, Rothiemurchus set off on the morning of 30th September and by evening had flown 118 km to roost overnight beside the Rio Mino in NW Portugal. Next day, he was along the river until 0800GMT and then set off south, being south of Ourense at 1100hrs; by 1800hrs he was on a small river south of the River Douro near Ferreiros de Tendais after a flight of 176 km. On 2nd October he flew 120km south to stop at midday at the Lago Verde after 120 km, a leisurely migration south. On 3rd October he was flying south by 0900GMT and at 1400hrs was NW of Mora; the signal of this batch was at 1600hrs when he was flying east towards Evora after a day flight of 152 km.

Stopping over

Rothiemurchus us living along the River Eume, his favourite Galician stop-over, with a flight to the Ortigueira estuary on the north coast on afternoon of 15th September.

Back to NW Galicia, Spain

By 0500GMT on 9th September he was on the French coast at St Valery, then at the next two hourly locations was just north of the esturay of the River Seine. He then flew SSW passing Mayenn an 1200hrs and Nantes at 1500. He flew out over the Bay of Biscay from Les Sables-d’Olonne at 1630hrs and at 2000hr was nearly a 100km west of the Gironde coast.  The next signal was not until 0900GMT on 11th when Rothiemurchus was perched on the north Spanish coast west of Ribadesella.  The next signal at 1400hrs showed that he had reached his favourite stop-off near As Pontes de Garcia Rodriguez.  A flight of over 1000 km

On south

Rothiemurchus was south of Stoke on Trent by 9am and south of Chasewater an hour later which was the last signal of this batch. He kept on flying but turned SE being just north of Pitsford Reservoir at 1pm and flew on past NW of London and came to roost in woods near Halling Lake, SW of Gillingham in Kent.sep 8th

Restarts migration

Rothiemurchus set off from Dalston on 8th September and was in central Lakes by midday. He then flew SE into the Lancashire hills and turned south to be just north of Manchester at 5pm.  Continued south to roost overnight in a wood SE of Macclesfield

On to Dalston, Carlisle

On 3rd, he flew around the Canonbie to Nichol Forest areas and by evening had reached favourite locations south of Dalston.  He stayed around previous haunts in the Dalston area on 4th to 7th September

Still in Perthshire

Rothiemurchus is still wandering in a range of 500 square km in Perthshire although he has moved a bit and spending more time by Loch Benachully.  I wonder if he will calling in and spend some time near Carlisle this autumn
