On 28th March, Beatrice left her overnight roost at the Etang des Pourcauds, NW of Mussidan, and flew 89 kms NNE before stopping in wooded farmlands east of Chassenuil-sur-Bonniere. Weather was not good for migrating.
Slow going
Beatrice sets off north
Still waiting
Still stopping over
Beatrice was still on the Adour at 2pm on 22nd March – best to stay there as today I’m at Rutland Water watching one of the early ospreys on a cold snowy day
Living on the River Adour
Beatrice was settled on the River Adour with one longer flight of 9.5 km west and back to the river at Pontoux-sur-l-Adour
Beatrice seen at River Adour
Jean-Valentin Dourthe emailed the other day to say he would go and look for Beatrice on the River Adour – he knew her favourite places from a previous visit but I sent him a map of her latest locations. Today Jean-Valentin wrote to say he found her yesterday and sent me some photos. It’s great to see her on the Adour and the habitat – it’s easy to see why she finds the place so suitable. Thanks Jean-Valentin for the photos.
Settled down on the River Adour in France
Beatrice starts her spring migration
Beatrice was down to Palmones on 16th and 25th February. On 26th she left the River Guadiaro and started her migration north, By midday she was over Cortes de la Frontera and roosted the night near a small river at Santa Elo. On 27th she flew north and roosted just NW of Piedrabuena and on 28th flew a short distance north to the reservoir Abraham , where she also stayed next day. On 2nd she migrated north to the west of Madrid and stopped at a small reservoir, El Pardo, north of Madrid. On 3rd she travelled 278 km to roost beside a little river NE of Logrono and on 4th in good weather she flew high over the Pyrenees and reached her stop-over site on the River Adour at 1600GMT. She settled there and is still there today.
Settled back on Guadiaro river
Beatrice remained on the river with a flight down to Palmones on 9th and trips to the Med coast on 7th and 13th. Beautiful sunny weather in Scotland and I passed her nest outlined against a clear sky in the afternoon today.
