No change

Beatrice spent last month within a range of two square km at her favourite site on River Guadiaro, with one flight down to the sea coast and back on 29th January

Very settled

Beatrice is now very settled in her normal wintering site and spent the whole of December within an area of 2 km²

Beatrice checked out.

Edward and Gayle Whalley tells me that the River Guadiaro has been very swollen this winter with heavy rains – they went to look for Beatrice and send me this note for 20th November.
“We drove up to the confluence of the Guadiaro and Genal Rivers today and parked opposite to the gated Orange Grove which Beatrice favours for her roost.  It was a beautiful November day – this year it seems like October and November have “swopped weather”. The River Bed has changed and we could not get as close to the water as we have done in previous years. We had only been there for about 10 minutes, when an Osprey came from the direction of the Orange Grove, flying low to the confluence and then down the Guadiaro.  It was around 15.00 hours (GMT + 1), managed to take some photos and when we returned home and enlarged them – we could see the aerial, transmitter and even decipher the green darvic (left leg) as 5B. She wasn’t gone more than 5 minutes when we spotted her flying low in circles above her roosting area with a fish. It was quite a decent size.  Attaching some photos, not the best quality but we haven’t got a prime lens.  However we were so thrilled to have seen her – what a privilege.
Very best regards to you
Edward and Gayle

Back and for between Spanish winter sites

Beatrice has been mainly at the reservoir at Istvan, but flew back to the River Guadiaro on 14th September and stayed there for four days; on 3rd October she again made the 35 km journey from Istvan back to her main wintering area. A different behaviour to normal.

Beatrice is on the reservoir de la Concepcion near Istvan

Beatrice back to old wintering site

On 19 August Beatrice did not stay at Istvan reservoir but in the afternoon flew west to the River Guadiaro and the orange groves where she normally winters. On 21st August at 13:00 hours she was over the Mediterranean Sea just north of San Diego and then flew to Istvan reservoir where she stayed until 23 August and then returned to her normal wintering site.

Completes autumn migration

Beatrice roosted beside the River Bullaque upstream from Luciana and today (18th August) set off before 0700GMT but only a few km, probably to eat a fish. Over an hour later she set off south passing over Sierra Morena mountains at midday. An hour later she was just east of Cordoba and then it was a flight over well-travelled lands in temperatures up to 35C to her wintering area.  She flew a little further east than usual over the Sierra de la Nieves to reach the Istvan Resevoir at 1730GMT after a flight of 285 km.  Another autumn migration completed, this time in 19 days.
