Beatrice is rearing a single chick this year and in the latter half of June the furthest she has been from the nest was perched in a wood 570 m from the nest at 7 AM on 19th June.
Beatrice has hatched young
Beatrice has started to make a few local flights now that she has young, including a trip to the nearest loch at 6.5kms and back. Good weather for chicks so far.
Hatched
I was at Beatrice’s nest today and she was crouching in the nest so I was sure that she had just hatched – several other nests had also hatched in last week.
Incubating in cold weather
Bearice is now well settled in incubation at her usual nest and with last year’s mate
Beatrice back home
On 8th April Beatrice was on her way at 9am and at midday flew north over Ballater in Deeside. She flew on north and spent the time from 2pm to 5pm visiting osprey nests in East Moray, where she bred a few years ago. By 7pm she had flown in past her nest but decided to roost overnight in woods about a km away. At 7am on 9th April she was back on the nest and I watched her during the morning on the nest with her mate. The nest is ready – fish are probably difficult to catch because of the cold winds so it will be some days before she lays her eggs and a new incubation starts.
Tough going in wintry weather
Slow progress through Wales and England
The cold wintry weather with bitter NE winds has delayed Beatrice’s migration through UK but as I write on Sunday morning looking at the snow falling in Moray there’s nothing here for an osprey to rush home for!
On 4th April she made just 38 km from near Oswestry north to roost overnight neat Eaton Hall. On 5th she was on the river there from 5am to 7am looking for a fish and then slowly travelled north via Manchester and Blackburn to roost that night on the River Ribble south of Hurst Green after just 9okm. Yesterday she set off slowly north but with the bad weather I would not expect her to go far – I’ll check her nest today to see if her mate is back.
Flew north to Haddington near Edinburgh
Crosses English Channel
Beatrice set off before 0800GMT and left the NW corner of Cherbourg after 0900hrs and an hour later was over the Channel flying NNW at 36km/hr. 3 hours later at 1pm BST She was SSE of Portland Bill flying towards land at sea level. She headed on passing Yeaovil and across the Bristol Channel from Cleveland to Newport, andf finally came to roost for the night NW of Abergavenny after 306 km
North to Cherbourg Peninsula
Beatrice wandered along the River Loire on 31st March after a few slow days and roosted that night near Anger. On 1st April she headed strongly north before 0900GMT and by 1400hrs was flying up west side of Cherbourg Peninsula. She settled for the night near Saint-Lo-d’Ourville after a flight of 236 km.
