Aigan seen and photographed in Spain

Really exciting to get an email from Damian Martin in Spain this afternoon asking me about an osprey with a satellite transmitter. Quick exchange and he sends me the coordinates, some photos and the details recorded – it’s Aigan – photographed for the second time on migration.

Would love to know more (specially as we are trying to get more official protection for this artificial wetland).
Regards,
Damian Martin

What a wonderful network the ospreys create and I like to think that we help nature conservation people in other countries achhieve their aims for the protection of important wetlands.  The following photos of Aigan were taken by Pablo Lopez – very many thanks Pablo

Stopping over in Spain

Aigan has remained in exactly the same area west of Madrid, ranging for 17 km along the main river but mainly near Villa del Prado

September 10th to 14th

Short flight to the west of Madrid

Away by 0900GMT and at 1100hrs was west of Madrid and then turned SW to settle for rest of day on Rio Alberche at Villa del Prado – just 90 km today

On through Spain

Aigan was under way before 0800GMT and at 1100 had passed Soria and Almazan at 1500hrs. Roosted east of Segovia after a day flight of 215 km

Over the Pyrenees into Spain

Data still coming in but she was still by the river at 0700GMT, but at 1200hrs was in a Pyrennean valley at Banca before flying over the col east of Monte Adi (1459 metres). At 13oohrs she was near Erro and then flew south to the east of Pamplona.  She stopped by a small reservoir in the faming plains SW of Calahorra after 165km

On into North Spain

Down to the Adour and north side of the mountains

Aigan had flown south of the lake by 0800GMT and crossed Arcachon Bay an hour later, and then flew down through France before stopping on the River Ardour (well downstream of Beatrice’s stopover location) at 1400hrs and then moved down river to roost for the night near Port de Lanne after 188 km flight.

Down to the north slopes of the Pyrenees

Coasted down to Les Landes

Aigan was out in fishing in the estuary at 0900GMT and flying over it at 1100hrs, then at 1200hrs she had flown over the sea and was close to Ile d’Re and an hour later flying over Ile d’Oleron. She  then coasted down over the mouth of River Gironde and at 1600hrs was perched in woods north of Lac d’Hourtin, where she roosted the night after a flight of 144 km.
