Beatrice off on autumn migration

Beatrice went back to her nest site on the afternoon of 8th August and then departed on migration at 11am on 9th August – the 6th autumn migration that we have tracked. At 7pm she was flying across the Firth of Forth from Fife to North Berwick, and roosted that night near Athelstaneford. Next day she only travelled 36 km to Lauder as she got caught up in the storm of the tail end of Hurricane Bertha. Next day was a day of floods in southern Scotland and Beatrice just flew 68 km to a forest south of Otterburn, where she rested up until the morning of 13th August. With better weather on 13th she flew 294 km during the day to roost that evening at Grimsthorpe Castle, SE of Grantham. Next day she flew on south and roosted overnight near Amersham.

Off on autumn migration

Beatrice completed her successful summer and departed her eyrie at midday on 6th August, leaving her three young to be fed by her mate.  She has settled as usual on the River Avon between Ballindalloch and Tomintoul

Very successful summer

Beatrice has had a successful summer and reared three young, which flew 2 weeks ago. She started to fly to her old haunts on the River Avon – a tributary of the River Spey – for short visits. On 30th July she did not return to her eyrie but roosted near the River Spey upstream from Knockando. This may be the start of her move south – leaving her mate to bring all the fish to their three young.

Rearing three young

Beatrice has a full brood this summer of three young. Hopefully her mate will catch plenty of fish for them; Beatrice made short trips to a loch 4 miles away on 29th and 23rd June

Breeding same nest

Beatrice is well on with her incubation and she has had only one flight of note – a quick visit to a loch 4 miles away on 3rd May – may be to wash.

Back to the same nest

Beatrice finally got round the mountains and got back to her old nest in Moray at 3.30pm on 6th April; next morning she was perched on her nest with her mate. Another migration completed and the start of a new breeding season

Still stuck south of the Cairngorms

Beatrice made a short flight north but quickly turned back at 8 AM, due to poor weather,  and returned to spend the day again at Auchintaple Loch.  The weather has improved this afternoon and maybe now she will get round the mountains.

Weather bound

Beatrice gotstuck in Angus because of poor weather over the mountains and spent the day around the loch

Heading for home – last stretch

Beatrice moved a little to the west at dawn and then headed away to the west at 10am near Roslin. She passed over the western suburbs of Edinburgh and crossed just to the east of the Bridges before 11am. The last signal of this batch was at midday when she was flying north at 43km/h just west of Loch Leven. She has under 200 km to go and with good weather she might just get home this evening.

I went to her nest site at 5.30pm but there was no osprey at the nest – to the south clouds over the mountains suggested there might be haar conditions south of the Cairngorm. When the data came in later it showed that Beatrice passed Perth and Dunkeld and changed heading to NE to skirt the Cairngroms (as usual) but got stuck in Glen Isla in Angus, and settled for the night at Auchintaple Loch.

Slow day in the Scottish Borders

Beatrice had a slow day and at 11am and midday she was perched on the hillside above the local river. She then flew north over the Borders, passing over Hawick and Selkirk and then settled to roost at 6pm in a small wooded valley near Tynehead in Midlothian. Just 70 km completed today.
